Despite being new to the FlexQube concept, Asier Gonzalez Urdampilleta has created a perfectly designed FlexQube cart on his own!

Asier Gonzalez Urdampilleta is a Process Engineer at GH Cranes & Components in Beasain, Spain. GH Cranes & Components is a global manufacturer of hoists, cranes and crane components. In its manufacturing range you can also find, gantry cranes, cantilever cranes, jib cranes, transfer carts, boat hoists and rubber type gantries. The wide range of products GH offers to all industries, has been designed with the principles of reliability, safety, durability, price and minimal maintenance.

Due to e.g. their product portfolio, their needs regarding material handling in their manufacturing change from time to time and Asier is working to find the best solutions for GH Cranes & Components.

Asier found FlexQube on LinkedIn and reached out to FlexQube’s sales representative for Spain and Portugal, Kristian Svensson (located in Valencia).

THE CHALLENGE!

Asier’s challenge was that GH Cranes & Components needed a customized cart which could handle heavy loads (above 1000 kilograms) of different special parts.
Asier had previously worked with aluminium profiles to design his carts. But they just wouldn’t cut it this time. “The aluminium profiles were too weak for our application and the pricing just too expensive” Asier says. The FlexQube® concept uses high-strength steel for its building block components. This makes it perfect for heavy duty solutions due to that you can easily design a heavy duty application by e.g. using more FlexBeams™ and heavy duty joints. If your need is for lighter material, it is easy to adjust the same design with e.g. less FlexBeams™ and more FlexTubes™. The customers’ needs defines the design.

THE RESULT!

Asier managed to design a unique and quite complex cart using FlexQube® building blocks and connection joints. By using the standardized components of FlexQube® you will lower both cost and lead time and bought yourself an insurance for the future when needs change – you can easily re-use the same components when designing a new application or easily make adjustment on a current application to keep an optimal function.

WE ASKED ASIER A FEW QUESTIONS REGARDING DESIGNING CARTS WITH THE FLEXQUBE® DESIGN PROCESS AND BUILDING BLOCKS

What do you see as the main benefits with doing the design on your own?
“Since I’m a mechanical engineer I’m used to designing my own applications. We already have our own customized parts drawn up so we can easily import them into the CAD-model of the cart. Also the support was always very helpful.”

What is the typical time it takes to design a cart like this?
“If I had to design the whole frame using only customized components it would probably take a month or more. Using the FlexQube™ system we could shorten that time significantly.”

Will you continue to design your future carts using the FlexQube system?
“Of course, Yes!”

What do wish from FlexQube in order to be able to make future designs even better and more efficient then today?
“I think that the support is good as it is. I would like more information of structural integrity and a FEM analysis. And perhaps a guide to if you build in a certain way you will get such and such strains.”

How much CAD experience do you have, and how much do you think is needed in order to start designing carts on your own?
“My CAD-experience is from the university. I have about 6 years of CAD-experience. You would be able to design your own carts in a day or two, but if you wants to make more advanced carts with lots of customized parts – I’d say about two months of training at least.”

Finally we would like to thank Asier for taking the time to do this interview with us and wish him good luck with future designs!
